I Struggle With Anxiety

His cheeks were red, his brilliant, hazel eyes were laughing, and the chill of the
snow was radiating from his entire being. He was wearing winter from head to toe.

"Hurry! Put on your shoes and coat! It's glorious!
Go stand out there in the falling snow and talk to God!"

I just blinked at my husband, "are you for real?"

Child-like excitement buzzed in my chest as I slipped on my boots, mittens, scarf
to go play in the snow with it's Maker; to go BE, to go EXPERIENCE, something other than

myself.

I am my own worst enemy. Have been for as long as I can remember. The voices spin webs
of confusion, fear - and before I know it I've worked myself into an imaginary, sometimes not,
crisis situation. Panic. A struggle to breathe. Just breathe.

I romped through the snow, softly singing, "let it rain down... open the flood gates of heaven,"
as fluffy white flurries rushed to kiss away the tear drops frosting on my cheeks. Sometimes you can
just feel God. Sometimes He just shows up in radiant glory and says, "Hey, I've got you."

Those are crushing words to someone who tells herself, "I've got myself". Day after day, month
after month, year after year; thousands of minutes spent on a messed up theology. "Bless me, Father,
for I have sinned..."
I've been holding it together all my life because I bought the lie from a dirty
dealing demon that if I fall apart, my world will go up in a puff of smoke. To hell with it.

"Do you pray?" someone asked me this week.
"Yes," I replied - a little confused as to how this applied to my visit with the allergist.
"Fox hole prayers. In and out. Lip service. Never long enough to let Him change you," he chimed.
I could feel my eyebrows begin to furrow and a lump of "he's right" come up into my throat.

The next day I walked into a counselor's office for the first time in my life.
"Why don't you trust God?" "What happens if YOU let go?" "Things are out of YOUR control and
THAT freaks you out."
I just stared back at him, trying to keep eye contact in my guilt, feeling
overwhelmed by the truth of the matter, the core of my heart.

And I feel God pull back another layer, stoke the fire, and order a deeper refinement this time.
Gold. We are all meant to be pure gold.

I told my husband that I've been read like a book twice this week.
I thought I was more mysterious than that, but apparently not. Must work on that.

"I am anxious and worried," has fallen from my lips one too many times in the past few months.
Today I was challenged to say instead, "I am prayerful and active." Anxiety, has no place here.
Children of God are not children of darkness, but of light. Even in the darkest night, the enemy has no
place unless we give it to him.

This is a process. Life in general, I suppose. We all have "things".
But I think the trick to surviving this valley of tears is to truly realize once and for all
that there is a God and all of "it" - all the "things" - is the great RESCUE plan to pull us into Eternity.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms;
if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
You know the way to the place where I am going.”
- John 14:1-4

Would You Take Your Child to Calvary?

A body beaten and bruised - stained and re-stained - with blood flowing forth
from a heart - beating, steady then failing, but winning the battle for YOUR soul.

How He Loves by David Crowder Band on Grooveshark

With every movement - He cries in pain under the weight of the cross He's bearing -
pressing, pushing deeper into the gaping wounds - those lashes. And that crown of thorns
driving further into His skull - as visions of YOU living in His great love come
before His tear-filled eyes. Wiping away the crimson sweat, blinking faster, breathing harder,
determined to accomplish the mystery - to beat death with death so that life with YOU,
with us all, could be so sweet in the bitterness of all the brokenness.
Even hell could not see it coming.

And I want to be there.

I want to collect every pebble, every stone, before His bare feet fall under the weight
of such sin. I want to be Simon of Cyrene - looking the Savior in the eye - incapable of fully
understanding, but still somehow sharing a glimpse into the crushing beauty of redeeming love.
I want to be there consoling Mama Mary - who knew she bore the Son of God so that He could die.
She knew. She knows. I fear I would have no words and she would be the one consoling me.
Roman crucifixion, a humiliating - suffocating death for criminals. I want to be
the "good thief" on the cross hearing saving words in the moment...

the moment He wins.

"Jesus answered him,
'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'"
- Luke 23:43

I want to be there crying out that I do believe.
I love you, Jesus.
Thank you, Jesus.

And this Lent, with Good Friday approaching, I find myself yearning to be there at
the original Good Friday. To let Him know that I am here trying so desperately to
satiate His deep thirst for souls by giving my whole life... throwing it all in - as measly
as the widow's mite - as ugly and broken as the next sinner - as needy to be healed
as the hemorrhaging woman, the blind man, the centurion's servant...

I wonder, if I could go, would I take my children? Would I take them to Calvary
to be there as the God of all creation breathes His last breath - a painful, horrifying tragedy
of holiness - to save us all? Would Jesus want them there?

Like many Christian parents, I find myself wondering, praying through the heart of our faith -
discerning, waiting, pouring out the richness of such mystery into the tiny souls of my children...

in time. When it's time.

I just want them to know the magnitude of that sacrifice.
I want them to know, I want to know, how much He really does love us.
Because He does.

Would you take your child to Calvary?

Breakfast on the Beach

John 21:1-19.
Jesus. The beach. Breakfast. Doesn't get much better than that.
______________________________________
"At that time, Jesus revealed Himself again to His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias." vs.1
______________________________________
When I was 5 years old I remember "pretending" to pray the rosary in front of my mom's hope chest.
I remember cuddling under the blankets and whispering night prayers with my little sister.
Our Father, Hail Mary, and a Glory Be - that was our innocent routine.
 photo 611da395-12b7-4c0b-afb9-f1d34d99038c_zps0b55eea5.jpg
But I am no longer a child. Jesus has been "revealing" Himself to me in new ways now
that I am an adult, wife, and mother. I no longer have hours on end to pray "pretend" rosaries.
I barely have time to take a shower each day.
______________________________________
"Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
He called out to them, 'Friends, haven’t you any fish?' 'No,' they answered.
He said, 'Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.'
When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish." vs 4-6

He has been inviting me to make my DAY an offering - to live ALL moments with Him...
not just the few, precious quiet ones I steal in my devotional time.

He's been showing me that it is OK to bring my children with me when I come
to Him in prayer. It is OK to invite them in. It is OK if they can't sit still or
speak in whispers. He wants to visit with all of us.

Jesus is such a leader, teacher, and friend in this passage.
I love this side of Him. Reminds me that He wants to be that for me too.
He wants to be part of my every day life. He wants to instruct me - if I'll let Him.

"When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
Jesus said to them, 'Bring some of the fish you have just caught.' So Simon Peter climbed back into
the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was
not torn. Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast.'" vs. 9-12

I love to meet Jesus in prayer on the beach... just like the apostles.
I love to imagine that we are just enjoying the day and living life together.
I love to feel the sun and sea breeze on my face.
I love to taste the goodness of the food He prepared.
I love to hear His warm laugh and feel His covering over me.
I love to think that THIS IS WHAT HE WANTS - relationship.

He wants to know if you want breakfast on the beach too.

Going Bunnies for Jesus

Yesterday I took the kids to peer at the Easter Bunny at the mall.
I say "peer" because there was NO WAY I was paying $10 bucks for my children to have
a moment on the bunny's lap that would most likely only lead to tears and night terrors.

We've been talking about the "Bunny" lately. He is EVERYWHERE.
He and Santa Claus have some serious PR reps. Job well done. My kids have noticed!

Our family has decided that bunnies can be part of Easter in a fun, Spring-is-here,
fluffy, feel good kind of way. But we have opted out of the commercialized Easter Bunny scene
to give our kids the chance to revel in the mystery of Holy Week and Easter morning with
ideas, images, and stories of the miracle that truly took place.

Am I worried that my kids will not believe in God
if we allow them to believe in the Easter Bunny?

(Because when they find out the Easter Bunny and Co. are
not real that must mean that Jesus isn't real too???)

Uhhh... definitely a concern, but not the main reason.

Our desire is to connect these special holidays with Christ and His saints,
REAL PEOPLE, so that our children can visualize, live, and thrive in the body of Christ.

Does that mean we can't celebrate the season with traditional flare?
I don't think so! We have been busy getting ready for Easter morning...

And here is a snapshot of reality. It was messy! There was tension and tears.
But we had fun!!! Broke a couple eggs in the process. Second breakfast, anyone?!
This is good though. A perfect representation of our souls before Christ...

broken... and crying out for a Savior!

 photo 41204903-f2dd-45be-a9d0-52abd88da4e2_zps2c701cd1.jpg photo 0753b8bd-7ff8-4b50-b749-2ad67d8ce28c_zps28074dc6.jpg

We knew that we wanted our kids to have Easter baskets too, but decided to call them
"RESURRECTION BASKETS" instead! Here is how it is going to work...

A lovely friend of mine had this beautiful idea to build a "tomb" in the
house to place Jesus in on Good Friday.
The only question I had was,
"How do I keep my BOYS (she has girls!) out of the TOMB... "TENT"... "FORT" ... for a couple days?!

Here is our solution. We let the boys play with this for a long time last night.
They loved crawling in and pretending to be Jesus. Hours of entertainment!
But we made it small enough (storage box with black cloth) so that we could
keep it UP HIGH for viewing purposes... and to prevent tomb raiders!

 photo 90f4b0a1-df4e-40f4-bde5-1ba8a6e49079_zps919d054d.jpg photo 67da28fd-df77-4795-8520-99c5df762db6_zps191a497a.jpg

They will also be placing their Easter baskets in the tomb with Jesus...
and on Easter morning... Jesus will be gone - RAISED FROM THE DEAD -
and their baskets will be RESURRECTED with lots of special treats!!!

Thoughts? I know you parents out there have them!
Especially when it comes to traditions and holidays with kids.
What's your jive? How do you bring Easter to life in your home?

P.S. we are LOVING this book about the THREE trees that were part of Jesus' life!
Thanks, Uncle Mattman!

He Gives Mercy

My little heart is a bleeding tablet of records. Records that hold memories of when I was hurt,
betrayed, laughed at, let down, ignored, forgotten, and taken advantage of.

I can see their faces, I know their names, and at a moment's notice
an entire memory can be recalled that allows me to relive those dark
seconds, minutes, hours... years.

I am sensitive. Easily wounded. Vulnerable. Skeptical. Desperate to trust.
Scared to forgive. Hesitant to heal. Slow to give mercy.

God could have looked at me, in all my broken, human weakness, and given me what I deserved...

but instead he blessed me with my husband.

 photo 1da96058-44b1-4847-a224-4f2799e7459a_zpsede2406b.jpg

It quickly brings tears to my eyes when I think of how well Nathan embodies
unconditional love and mercy. A gift.
A gift that God lavishes upon me, as Nathan's wife.

When I look at my spouse, I see Christ.
And it almost kills me... the weight of God's love crashing down on me.
God knew. He knew I needed Nathan to really learn how to
love unconditionally // trust // share forgiveness // give mercy.

He gave me what I was lacking.

My husband has led me by his example to not keep track of my wounds,
but to run to the cross - pour out my broken heart - and let God give His mercy through me.

I say "let God give His mercy through me" because that is what it takes.
I need God to work through me because I feel so incapable of doing it on my own.
_______________________________________________
"If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness..."
Pslam 130:3-4
_______________________________________________

Nathan gives mercy because God gives mercy.
And I take notes. I am the student of God and my husband.
Diligently working, working, working out my salvation
in this school of marriage.

When we look at our spouse, children, family members, coworkers, classmates, roommates, etc.
WHO do we see? Even in the midst of all that humanity, God is there - in the good memories
and the bad - to show His love for us and give us opportunities to practice grace.

He gives mercy. And I am soaking it up.
